SplitRoute Privacy Policy
Effective 21 October 2026
SplitRoute is a travel planner and group expense splitter. This policy explains exactly what the app does with your information. It is written against what the app actually does, not what is typical.
- There is no account. No email address, no password, no sign-up.
- Your trips live on your device. Nothing is uploaded unless you choose to share a trip.
- There is no analytics, no advertising, no tracking, and nothing is sold.
- Your location is read only after you tap the locate button on the map, only while the map is open, and never leaves your device.
No account
SplitRoute has no login. We do not know who you are, we cannot identify your device, and we have no way to link one trip to another or to a person.
What stays on your device
Trips, itineraries, packing lists, expenses, receipt photos, the activity history, and — if you use the operator features — your branding, trip templates, per-departure costing and passenger details.
Operator costing and passenger details are never uploaded, under any circumstances, including when a trip is shared.
What leaves your device, and when
Only if you choose to share a trip. Sharing generates an 8-character code. While a trip is shared, its contents — the trip details, itinerary, packing list, members' names, expenses and any receipt photos attached to them — are stored in our Firebase database so other people on the trip can see them.
Please understand what the code is. It is the only key to that trip. There are no accounts, so the app cannot tell one person from another: anyone who has the code can read the trip and change it. Share it the way you would share a door key, and only with people on the trip. To give a client or a non-participant a copy, export a PDF instead — that is a file you send, not access you grant.
A trip you never share is never uploaded.
Other services the app contacts
Some features need the internet. Each request goes directly from your device to the service named, and each one gets only what it needs to answer:
| Service | Receives | Used for |
|---|---|---|
| Photon (komoot) | The characters you type into a destination or stop field, once you have typed three; and, from version 1.1, a point you press and hold on the map | Place suggestions, and naming a spot you pin on the map |
| OpenStreetMap tiles (versions before 1.1) | Which part of the map you are looking at | Drawing the map |
| OpenFreeMap (version 1.1 and later) | Which part of the map you are looking at. Its requests may pass through Cloudflare | Drawing the map |
| openrouteservice (HeiGIT, version 1.1 and later) | The coordinates of the stops on the day you are viewing, sent through SplitRoute's own server, which passes them on without keeping them | Road routes and travel times between stops |
| MET Norway (api.met.no) | The coordinates of your destination | The weather forecast |
| open.er-api.com | Nothing about you — it is asked for the day's rates | Currency conversion |
| Firebase (Google) | A shared trip's contents, and only while it is shared | Syncing between people on a trip |
| RevenueCat | Which plan you bought, and a random identifier the app generates for your installation | Remembering what you have paid for |
None of these receive your name or an account, because the app does not have one. The only identifier involved anywhere is the random one RevenueCat generates for your installation so it can remember what you bought. It is not taken from you or from your device, and there is no account for it to be linked to.
Where those services are run by other companies, their own privacy policies apply to what they do with a request once it arrives.
Location
The map can show where you are, but only if you ask it to. The first time you tap the locate button, your phone asks your permission. If you decline, nothing else happens and the rest of the map works exactly as before.
When you do allow it, your position is used to draw a marker on the map and for nothing else. The marker follows you while the map stays open, and stops the moment you close it; the app never reads your location in the background. It is never saved to a trip, never included in a trip you share, never written into an export or a backup, and never sent to us or to any of the services listed above. It exists only while you are looking at the map.
Weather forecasts and routes are still based on the destination you typed, not on where you are.
Purchases
Payment is handled entirely by Apple on iPhone and by Google Play on Android. The app never sees your card, your billing address, or your Apple or Google account.
To remember what you have bought, the app uses RevenueCat, which records the purchase against a random identifier generated for your installation — not your name, your email or a device ID. If you reinstall the app, restoring a purchase asks Apple or Google Play what you own; we have no record of you to look up.
Camera and photos
You are asked for camera or photo access only when you attach a receipt to an expense. The image is resized on your device and stored with that expense. It leaves your device only if that trip is shared, and only to the people with the code.
Tracking
SplitRoute does not track you across apps or websites, does not use advertising identifiers, and contains no advertising or analytics software. There is nothing here that would require Apple's tracking permission prompt, which is why you never see one.
Children
SplitRoute is not directed at children and collects nothing about anyone knowingly.
Keeping and deleting your information
Data on your device is yours and stays until you delete it. Deleting a trip deletes its itinerary, packing list, expenses and history from your device. Passenger details can be reviewed and deleted at any time from Settings, and that works whether or not you hold a paid plan.
To remove a shared trip from the cloud, delete it and choose the option to remove it from the cloud. Anyone still holding the code loses access, though copies already synced to their devices remain on their devices — the app cannot reach into someone else's phone.
Step by step, and what is kept: Delete your data.
Changes
If this policy changes, the effective date above changes with it.
